Our rivers are our highways into the interior, and are both the most exotic and most common way to reach remote lodges and camps. The opportunities for tourists to explore Suriname by boat increase every season. Most expeditions to the interior include some travelling in local dug-out canoes or korjalen, but in the coastal districts and on the major rivers our more comfortable river cruise boats are the way to travel. From Nickerie and Paramaribo, boat trips along the Corantijn and Coppename Rivers, the Nickerie River and its tributaries the Marataka and Wayambo, and the Saramacca Rivers, take tourists right into the heart of West Suriname. The unfolding scenes along the riverbanks, visiting villages as you cruise further into the interior, and sighting giant otters in Kaburikreek are experiences not to be missed.
Surinamese history is also often best appreciated from the rivers. In the picturesque Commewijne District, many of the old plantation houses are only accessible from the rivers. Jodensavanne, the 17th century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, is another historic site well worth reaching by water, and this makes a popular trip from Paramaribo.
