In the year 2009, there are four important training institutes in Suriname in the field of visual and plastic arts:
- The Instituut voor de Opleiding van Leraren (the Higher Teacher Training Institute), abbreviated I.O.L.
- The Akademie voor Hoger Kunst en Cultuur Onderwijs (the Academy for Higher Education in Arts and Culture), abbreviated AHKCO
- The Nola Hatterman Institute
- The Vereniging Herdenking Javaanse Immigratie (Association Remembrance of Javanese Immigration), abbreviated VHJI
